Epic report. Keep them up!
Have an idea - would it make the bag sit more stable if you buy two sets of bars(with total 4 holders) and attach the other bar (with two holders)underneath the first so that the bag rests on two bars(rather then one bar)?!
Yes that definitely works if you’re carrying a bigger load 🤙(check out the cradle from rogue panda) but for me not necessary, because I’m not carrying much weight and the bag snugs up to the handlebar and the accessory bar so it’s rock solid- thanks for commenting- ride on!
Thanks for your idea and video, ride on you too@@DirtyTeethMTB
Good to hear the high carb numbers from the pros. As someone who is about 200#, I normally need to do 130-140g/hr for endurance events, otherwise I'll bonk. You are likely leaving performance on the table doing less carbs. My carb sources used to be infinit, but swapping to flow to add the fructose source has been instrumental in increasing hourly intake without stomach issues. Then add a fig bar half or cliff bar half each hour as well. Great video, very interesting and informative. Those power numbers are absolutely crazy. Lastly, I've been rocking the 2.2 Race Kings on my Stormchaser. They are slower on super flat and fairly smooth local gravel but when things are technical they are great. I wish they had a 2.0 performance RK, that would be perfect IMO.
Great video and breakdown! Thank you 🙏🏼 Will be watching for more.
Thanks for watching!
Fairlife chocolate milk is my grocery store rest stop treat, amazing and really good macros. Also Fage yogurt with some fruit. I sure got sick of bars and gels much prefer nuts and raisins in my chow bar bag
Great data , really interesting 👍 the carb intake really amazing to consume that amount for 10hrs , i guess that must make a huge difference to pro rider speed times for these races and tour de france . So are they pretty much consuming all their calories per hour just carbs for whole race and no fats or protein at all , just using existing body fat 🤔 i think Race Kings may well be the fashion next 12 months to challenge Mezcals 🤠
Thanks for watching and commenting, ride on!
Wow. That breakdown was excellent. Well done Thank you!!
Glad you enjoyed it! Ride on :)
Top drawer DT, top drawer.
Thanks for your kind words 🤙
Thank you for all information, that’s a lot of work collecting data and stats. Next year I’ll riding the Atlas Mountain Bike Race and if you can make a few videos focusing on how to prepare for such race for beginners, in a language that any rookie like me can understand, I’m just the average recreational/bikepacker rider who wants try out an ultra endurance bike race. I have seen many of your videos on the ultra endurance subjects but sometimes is overwhelming when you compress so much info and you talk too fast too 😂 cheers from Norway 🇳🇴
thanks for commenting - sorry I speak fast - good luck on the AMBR :)
big fan
Thanks for watching and commenting - ride on!
Thanks for all the time spent on this video, it was cool to see all the different stats.
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment :)
Loved it 👍
Glad you liked it - ride on!
DirtyT carbs are a myth! Look up professor Tim Nokes he made up carb loading he also invented GU energy gels , he has since redacted all of his work , now he has studies which proves we do not carbs ! Most modern diseases are caused by sugar cancer feeds on it apart from the sugar talk great vid
Thanks for your insight🤙 what does Nokes suggest for fueling intense workouts? Ride on :)
Agreed with @ralphkeith2905. This is brilliant information and helps us mere mortals understand what it takes to up our performance! Great work Alan!!!
Does anybody discuss the likelihood of performance enhancing "supplements" in non-pro racing?
Watchin and reading the recent scandals and history in the tdf in recent years , I would say extras for performance is very high . Alot of folk ex pros from the peleton
Good question
Great information. As a slow, back of the pack rider that struggles with nutrition, it was interesting to learn how the pros do it. Thanks for all the effort you put into this.
Glad it was helpful!
Comparing Dylan with your dog licking an empty tuna can ... golden!
😂 thanks - didn’t think anyone would get that far into the video!
Lachlan Morton is just a machine and already a legend. He's probably one of the few who still got a career after having a career if you know what I mean. And what a surprise from Rosa, mad respect for having 2 career at the same time !
Rosa is definitely on everyone's radar now :) I know I'll be keeping tabs on her, and super friendly too...
gear is easy compared to fueling

I hope to drive down from Canada and do this trail in 2 weeks!
lucky you! it's gorgeous!
Impressive, but he did not do it alone. He had a crew around him.

Bonkers! Stonking effort. Great overview. enjoyed that. 👍 Subscribed.

You do not need expensive tools for wheelbuilding. The first few pairs of wheels, I built in the dropouts themselves. Radial and lateral trueness gauges were zip ties attached to the stays, fork crown etc. Later on I built a wheel truing stand with not much more than a few bits of plywood. These sponsored guys are bound to tell you to invest in the best. If you run a shop, fine, but privateers and enthusiasts, save yourself the money with a little effort and the finished product will be so much more rewarding.
Thanks for watching and commenting 🤙
Cool advice! I like your energy.
Thanks for watching!
Outstanding Alan ! Is there much difference in weather between the early June Grand depart and August ?(that rain/mud can slow you down so much)
Different every year of course - but GD tends to be wetter/ snowier/ muddier / slower up north - but August tends to be monsoonish and brutally hot in southern CO and NM… so ITT’s in August/Sept may be a little faster if lucky with weather, but def no picnic… ride on!!
Fantastic vid, thanks
Glad you enjoyed it 🙏
Fantastic vid, bro - thanks v much. This is super interesting analysis
Thanks for watching! Ride on 🤙
I’ve been away from riding for too long. Finally back and checking out some of my old favorite YT content. Your videos don’t disappoint! Thoroughness and passion for bikepacking is evident. Thanks for all that you do to promote cycling.
Thanks so much for the kind words! Ride on :)
I built Berd wheels myself about 3 years ago. They're still rock solid but it was a lot of work! Next time I'll leave it to the professionals.
😂 thanks for sharing🤙
I'm nearly 63 and Lachlan's my hero for multiple reasons. Firstly: we hail from the same area, ie Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia. Secondly: he's such a great ambassador for our sport! Thirdly: he continues to think outside the box when it comes to taking on new challenges! Fourthly: I love his altruism! Fifth: he's just a cool, down to earth guy and now I regret not going over to him in Christchurch Airport in March and saying "Hi" (despite my wife encouraging me to!) and finally: he's one hell of a hardcore bike rider!!
Thanks so much for chiming in!! I appreciate you sharing this 🤙🤙

Those are bitchin wheels Jaco…thanky for sharing
Thanks mang!
Off topic. Interesting how you packed your bike with bottle cages and rotors attached, and bags. On topic, love getting new wheels delivered. Have fun.
Yup - that is the issue I have with frame bags....unless you have bottle cages on the back of the saddle where can you put them for easy access ?
Thanks for watching and commenting 🤙 good catch on the CL rotors, I was lazy and didn’t wanna bring the tool… so they stayed on… I protected them as best as I could and they were fine, luckily :) same with bottle cage on fork… I rolled the dice 😂 thanks for paying attention! Ps if you’re talking about seat bag, that came off when the seatpost did and I took it in my carry on… ride on 👍
Not sure why they have such low weight limits on their wheels - either 200 or 250. I use Reserve wheels with no limit. Would like to try Berd spokes but I need that weight limit and warranty for so much cash.
Thanks for sharing 🙌
While I enjoy my BERD wheels I’ve had issues long term with spokes loosing tension requiring truing fairy frequently, and have had one come totally out on a ride. So much so to the point I took the wheels apart and rebuilt with DT brass nipples and spoke prep. Much better since then but wouldn’t recommend trusting for long term bike packing with the stock alloy nipples that come pre treated with a thread lock.
Interesting observation, thanks for sharing 🤙
Wow...scary issue when one pays so much.
I have a set on my Spur and have beat the living hell out of them with no issues.
I’m a professional wheel builder and have been building with BERD spokes for 4 years now. I have yet to see this issue when using their recommended nipples or the nipples that Enve supplies with their rims. The sets I’ve built have, until last week, been very reliable. Fortunately the first spoke failure in four years was on my personal bike! It would have been quite embarrassing to have it happen to a client. Still trying to figure out what happened.
@thomasseymour4190 great to hear :) thanks for sharing 🤙
Vid keeps comparing Halls JUNE Depart times with bad snow, way more rain with someone who rode it at the end of August in mostly sun.. apples and bananas! Yes, he is fast, but Stop!
Thanks for chiming in :) There’s nothing closer to Lachlan’s time than Mike Hall’s official record, so I have to reference it :) I tried to give Mike Hall ample respect in the video, and it’s out of that respect that I refer his “mind-blowing” ride multiple times. Sorry you find fault in that. The fact is, Lachlan’s time was 1 day and 10 hours faster than Hall’s… true, LM didn’t have snow up north… but he had plenty of rain and peanut butter mud and hotter days in southern CO and NM… IMHO, a few hours of HAB up Richmond Peak and Red Meadow Pass… heck, even if MH hiked a full day in the snow… it still wouldn’t give LM a 34 hour advantage… nor would Koko claims detour, film crew, etc - again, my humble opinion - thanks again for taking the time to watch and share your thoughts:) ride on🤙 🚴
I'd love to see an in-depth forensic review of a rim that failed and what caused it.
Luckily I don’t have a rim to do that type of video with :) ride on!
bird spokes are a dream for Bikepacking. Light, easier to store in your bag and easy to swap since they're straight pull.
💯
That’s one great pair of tire. Thanks for another great informational video. Take care, Al
Thanks 👍
Hey Alan, nice overview and early review. I have the now discontinued TR27 Berd wheels on my bike and I love theml I9 hub in front and Talon in the rear. When i get some extra cash i'm going for the Onyx hubs as well so I can ride in silence!
Thanks for sharing :) Ride on!!

Vesper rear hub is on my Christmas wish list… for the last few years haha. Hopefully this year :)
Fingers crossed! 🤞
Definitely super human.. physical and mental strength to endure and still maintain top level performance is incredible.

He’s definitely a gifted rider! Thanks for sharing :)
What a legend of a rider! Great job putting that video together, a lot of work there! ✌️
Much appreciated! Thanks for watching :)
Lachlan won it in 2023 since the TD started today.
Thanks for commenting :) To clarify, Lachlan rode an ITT in Sept 2023 - he did not partake in the Grand Depart - ride on!
@DirtyTeethMTB so does the winner of the TD in june of 2023 still count even though Lachlsn rode the course in September under different weather conditions and possibly different course due to detours?
@@stevemullin1195 Great question, and I hope my answer isn't too confusing :) Yes, the winner of the Tour Divide Grand Depart in 2023 (Ulrich Bartholomes) is the "2023 winner". There is a Grand Depart winner every year. But anyone can do an ITT (individual time trial) of the route, starting on any day of the year... and if they follow Tour Divide rules, they can be an official finisher. If their finishing time is faster than previous records, they can hold the record /FKT (fastest known time) - but it remains separate from the Grand Depart standings each year. BTW, the female record/FKT of the TD is held by Lael Wilcox, from an ITT she did in August of 2015. With Lachlan, it becomes gray :) He did an ITT, but had a film crew documenting his ride. Under TD rules, this is considered "support" and therefore his ride/finishing time, blazing fast as it may be, is "unofficial". He was well aware of this rule and that his ride would "not count" officially. And yes, to make it even more confusing, records/FKT's may not count due to fire re-routes, etc. For example, Mike Hall rode what would've been a TD record time in 2013, but it's "unofficial" because of a fire detour in NM that replaced a tough off-road section with pavement... and that was during the Grand Depart. So he "won" the 2013 TD, but did not get the record that year. Anyhoo, that was a mouthful, but hope it helps!! Ride on :)
@DirtyTeethMTB you mentioned Lael, she's currently on a RTW trip to set a new record...you go girl...I've always dreamed about sailing around the world when I was a kid reading about Robin Grahams trip on The Dove...hope she makes it thru all those Asian countries where it's hard to get a visa to enter.
